The Council of the EMS, in his biannual session held in Budapest on the 21st of July 1996, decided to choose the candidature presented by the Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques (Catalan Mathematical Society) to organize the 3rd European Congress of Mathematics in Barcelona on July 2000.
